Learn a number of the ASL vocabulary used by signers for speaking about the human body. Included is often a link to an accompanying downloadable vocabulary study sheet.
Signers who use American Sign Language his or her primary method of communication must learn specific vocabulary to talk successfully about their bodies. For example, ASL signers must use different signs to discuss different body parts such as fingers, wrists, arms, elbows, and shoulders xtrasize. The following section provides descriptions in the motions used by some basic signs required by ASL signers to talk about the skin.
Abdomen, Belly or Stomach ' Begin with all the fingers from the right hand together. Place the proper fingertips about the stomach with all the palm facing our bodies. Poke the stomach twice.
Ankle ' Spell the term A-N-K-L-E using the sign language alphabet.
Arm ' First from the right hand to the letter B of the sign language alphabet. Place the back with the right hand around the left shoulder. Drag the fingertips in the right hand along the left arm for the wrist.
Armpit ' Lift the left arm and support the left fist in front of the face. Point at the left armpit with all the right index finger.
Artery ' Begin with the left hand locked in front with the body with the palm facing up. Make a fist while using right hand. Place the best fist about the left wrist. Trace circles the left arm with all the right fist to the middle with the left forearm.
Back ' Reach within the right shoulder and tap the back using the right hand twice.
Blood ' Begin with all the left hand in front in the chest with all the fingers held open and also the palm facing one's body. Form the best hand in to a fist with the index finger straight. Touch the tip of the nose with the right index finger. Move the proper index finger down to in front of the left hand. Then open the fingers with the right hand. Move the open right hand down in the chin for the waist.
Body ' Place the palms of the hands on either side in the chest. Move the hands on the front from the torso to the abdomen.
Bottom or Butt ' Point on the buttocks while using left index finger.
Breast ' Begin with all the fingers in the right portable together. Touch the left breast using the right fingertips. Then touch the proper breast using the right fingertips.
Cheek ' Pinch the best check using the right fingers.
Chest ' Begin while using fingers of both of your hands held together. Tap the fingertips on either side from the upper chest nearby the armpits using the palms facing out. Then move the hands down and tap the fingertips on either side of the lower chest.
Chin ' Point on the chin with all the right index finger.
Ear ' Grab the correct earlobe between the proper thumb and index finger. Wiggle the ear.
Elbow ' Hold the left arm with a diagonal through the chest. Tap the left elbow using the right index finger.
Eyes ' Point for the right eye and then the left eye using the right index finger.
Fingers ' Hold the hands in front from the body at waist level with all the wrists bent along with the palms facing toward one's body. The thumbs point people to each other. Wiggle the fingers.
Forehead ' First from the letter Q with the sign language alphabet with the right hand. Place the right hand around the left side of the forehead with the tips with the thumb and index finger pointing towards left. Move the proper hand across the forehead.
Hair ' Use the correct thumb and index finger to tug in a section of the hair around the right side of the head.
Hands ' First form both hands in the letter B in the sign language alphabet with the palms facing one's body. Tap the left wrist with the pinky of the right hand. Then tap the proper wrist with all the pinky in the left hand.
Head ' Place the best fingertips on the top with the head with the palm facing down. Move the hand on the side of the face towards the chin.
Heel ' Begin my holding the left turn in front from the chest using the fingers together along with the palm facing down. Form the proper hand using the middle, ring, and pinky fingers folded on top of the palm along with the thumb and index fingers spread to make up the letter L. Tap the correct thumb on the bottom in the left wrist twice.
Hip ' Curl the right arm around the proper side from the body so that the proper palm faces up. Touch the proper hip using the right fingertips.
Knee ' First spell the saying K-N-E-E with all the sign language alphabet. Then point out down towards knee.
Leg - First form both hands in the letter B with the sign language alphabet using the palms facing each other along with the fingertips pointed towards ground. Place the proper hand in front from the right hip and also the left submit front in the center in the body. Move both hands along the right leg.
Mouth ' Trace a circle throughout the mouth while using right index finger.
Neck ' First form the right hand with all the fingers together and also the palm facing down. Tap the proper side of the neck using the right fingertips.
Nose ' Tap the nose twice with the right index finger.
Penis ' First form the right hand to the letter P in the sign language alphabet. Then tap the middle finger on the nose twice.
Shoulder ' Tap the left shoulder twice while using fingers and palm with the right hand.
Toes ' Hold the hands in front of the body at waist level using the wrists bent as well as the palms facing toward the body. Tuck the thumbs to the palms with the hands. Wiggle the fingers.
Vagina ' Begin by forming both hands with the middle, ring, and pinky fingers folded on top of the palms. Spread the thumb and index fingers to from the letter L on your hands. Invert the hands so the index fingers point down. Then support the hands in front of the abdomen and tap the index fingers and thumbs together twice.
Waist ' First make up the letter Q in the sign language alphabet with both hands. Place the thumbs and index fingers throughout the bellybutton xtrasize. Move the hands apart from one another along the waist.
Wrist ' Hold the correct fist in front with the face. Pinch the best wrist between your left thumb and index fingers. The other fingers from the left hand should curl loosely onto the left palm.
